CANTILEVERED CORTEN PERGOLA
Tony Woods MSDG MBALI is an award-winning garden designer, author, and general horticultural enthusiast. Since founding Garden Club London in 2012, one of the leading garden design and landscaping studios in London, he’s achieved multiple garden design accolades including RHS Young Designer of the Year competition at Tatton Park 2013.
Arguably, his highest achievement so far came at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show (2018), where he won a gold medal and best in category for ‘Space to Grow’ for his garden ‘Urban Flow’. Tony designed ‘Urban Flow’ to respond to climate change, whilst demonstrating the use of the planet’s natural resources. Tony describes the practical solutions of his garden to the Garden Design Journal.
\”It retains the strong, bold landscaping seen in many show gardens, but we have designed it so that visitors can translate most of the ideas into their own gardens. We have included permeable paving and lots of planting, an outdoor kitchen and solutions for privacy other than pleached trees and higher fences\”
We were lucky enough to be part of this beautiful garden. Tony and the Garden Club London team approached us to design and fabricate bespoke ornamental fretwork for the cantilevered Corten pergola with our design ‘Flow’. The pattern is reminiscent of cracked earth, referencing the garden’s focus of water conservation.
“Martine [creative director and founder of Stark&Greensmith] has developed a stunning pattern that perfectly reflects the key messages of the garden and has used shapes inspired by natural changes associated with climate change, water flow and leaf shapes in the planting scheme to develop this truly striking addition to our RHS Chelsea garden.” – Tony Woods on collaborating with Stark & Greensmith.
